Three ways to make data unrecoverable.
Overwrite a file 7 times (DoD 5220.22-M), scramble its name, then delete. The bytes and the filename are both gone.
Recursively shred entire folders — nested directories, locked files (scheduled on reboot), read-only files handled automatically.
Overwrite all unallocated space so files you deleted long ago — the "ghosts" still on disk — become unrecoverable too.
Most "shredders" won't tell you this. We will.
On modern SSDs and flash drives, wear-leveling and TRIM mean the drive controller may keep copies of your data that software cannot address or overwrite. So no app — ours included — can guarantee physical destruction on an SSD. The right answer for SSDs is full-disk encryption (BitLocker) from day one: when the key is destroyed, the data is cryptographically unrecoverable. Secure Delete tells you when you're on an SSD and recommends exactly this.
Phones encrypt storage by default and don't expose raw blocks to apps, so per-file "shredding" isn't meaningful there. The real control is the built-in encrypted erase (Settings → Erase All Content).
